Wind River has announced a test automation framework aimed at streamlining the software quality assurance process for embedded Linux developers. Wind River Test Management (WRTM) enables development teams to plan and execute tests, perform fact-based analysis, and rapidly resolve testing issues, says the company. The features (and benefits) of the test management tool are described as:

  • Test planning facilities for creating manual and automated test cases
  • Test execution framework for automating execution of multiple test suites on selected targets
  • Automatic collection of test and fault data for reproducing defects
  • Diagnostics interface for shortening defect resolution process
  • Auto-generated "dynamic" code coverage and performance measurement, collected without special test builds or additional test harnesses
  • "Virtual Lab Management" (VLM) for managing boards, provisioning software builds, and sharing access to boards
  • Wind River Workbench integration
  • Support for Linux and VxWorks run-time platforms

Customer Experience Testing

Three Definitions of Customer Experience Testing

Traditional enterprise testing seeks to answer whether applications and technologies behind a service launch will perform as intended. Customer-experience testing moves beyond that exercise, going further to evaluate whether the people working with the systems and the business processes defined for them are likely to prove successful

From Xchange

Customer experience testing is the testing of a product or service from the perspecitive of a customer.

When a product or service goes live, the customer experience is critical as it is a major factor in the take up and retention of the product or service. Unlike technical testing, customer experience testing is about customer perception, which can differ from reality. This is based on customer expectations and emotions as well as physical performance and processes.

From Customer Experience Testing glossary entry

Customer experience measurement or testing is a well established method to discover issues in the experience of a product, website or service. A customer experience issue is identified as brand value, information or functionality that is hard to find, use or learn.
In our testing, these customer experience issues can be measured by: perceived value, time to complete each task, human errors made during the test and the human reaction to any tasks in the test.

New software test lab

ACULIS, Inc., an industry leader in custom software development and IT consultation, has partnered with Utah Valley State College (UVSC) to construct a new state-of-the-art software development and testing facility, to be called the "ACULIS Software Test Lab."

Goals of the new the joint venture lab facility are to provide what UVSC officials are calling "Engaged Learning Programs," incorporating actual business environments and development scenarios with the students' career tracks, providing an educational experience that initiates hands-on experience toward real-world employment opportunities.

"The test lab will simulate real-world business situations that challenge students' career tracks and give learners the breadth of knowledge and the familiarity they'll need to stake out that competitive edge," says ACULIS CEO James Stone.

Construction began in January 2007, with an official opening scheduled for February 2008. Students will take theirs seats in the state-of-the-art ACULIS Software Test Lab as early as spring semester of 2008.

End to end testing definition

End to End testing. Testing a complete application environment in a situation that mimics real-world use, such as interacting with a database, using network communications, or interacting with other hardware, applications, or systems if appropriate.

End to end testing: I don’t think this term will have a formal DoD definition, although the meaning seems clear enough. To me, it means the evaluation of an item in the context of its complete deployment cycle (for example, pre-launch to target impact).
(from Defence Acquisition University)

End-to-End testing. Similar to system testing; the 'macro' end of the test scale; involves testing of a complete application environment in a situation that mimics real-world use, such as interacting with a database, using network communications, or interacting with other hardware, applications, or systems if appropriate.

software testing dictionary)

End-2-End testing: A test of the ability of a system to transmit data to a receiving system through an intermediary.

Automating software regression testing just got a whole lot simpler

Acutest, a software testing consultancy, and Odin Technology, a provider of automated testing solutions, announced a strategic agreement aimed at helping customers improve the business value they derive from automated testing.
Odin Technology is the creator of the Axe Automated Testing Framework. Axe provides a means to rapidly deploy automated testing systems that can be used by non-technical staff with the minimum of training. It is compatible with all leading automated test execution tools, including those from Mercury
– Winrunner and QTP (Quick Test Pro); Compuware – TestPartner and QARun; and IBM Rational - Robot.
Acutest concentrate solely on testing IT and technology-centred change with the goal of substantially increasing the value their customers derive from testing. Increased value means:

  • reducing the elapsed time spent testing
  • reducing the risk to going live
  • reducing the cost of software testing.

  • “There’s a close alignment of the goals of our two organisations,” explained Barry Varley, CEO, Acutest. “We both focus on helping businesses achieve more from testing. We both want our customer’s to achieve more with their existing resources, such as their investment in technology & testing tools and their people. Odin specialises in testing products and Acutest specialises in testing services. By combining our expertise we can offer our customer’s significant additional benefits.”
Market analysts, such as Ovum, are predicting significant growth in the number of companies that are trying to automate their testing activities.
“There are excellent tools available to help execute automated tests but test automation still has a poor reputation for delivering value.” said Duncan Brigginshaw, Director of Odin. “One problem is that scripting for these tools requires a lot of skill, so companies are bringing in teams of automated testers to translate their tests into code for automated regression testing. Our product removes this requirement and empowers the business testers to create automated tests themselves. This removes a whole layer of activity that adds no benefit but adds real costs in time and money to both the creation and maintenance of the scripts.”
Removing the dependency on automated testers provides a major boost to productivity. Combining this with Acutest’s services amplifies it further for automated software testing systems..
“We’ve customised our testing services around Odin’s offering” commented Graeme Holmes, Sales Director, Acutest. “We help organisations create the right automation testing strategy using our principle-centred testing approach and risk based testing techniques. This already provides considerable productivity improvements and with the incorporation of Axe the business case to automate testing is compelling. ROI is increased dramatically.”

    Interesting testing questions answered interestingly

This is a link to my blog which deals with frequently asked questions in software testing. IBe warned though - the questions and answers are not completely serious.
